Abstract

Deanol, a cholinergic drug, has recently become available in Korea. Since most stimulant drugs such as methylphenidate or amphetamine are regulated by the government, deanol may be used as a substitute drug for attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder patients. We experienced 2 patients with this disorder who were referred by their teachers because of hyperactivity, inattention and impulsiveness. Thorouga information was obtained from their teachers and their parents. The patients performed neuropsychologicz 1 tests including MFFT, CPT, and KWISC and learning tests including PALT and FRT before treatment. The same tests were repeated after 3 months of treatment with deanol and the results compared.
The teachers¢¥ and parents¢¥ reports noted improvement in both cases after three months of treatment However, the changes in the neuropsychological and learning tests were not consistant. One case shower some improvemant in KWISC, MFFT, CPT, PALT, and FRT, .while the other did not.
Further double blind studies are needed to confirm whether or not the improvements were due to deanol or a placebo effect.
